Nigeria’s ministry of health has been criticised for requesting a $200 million loan for the fight against malaria. The loan was initially popularised by the media as mosquito net fund, but the Ministry of Health has set the record straight.
In a statement yesterday, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire says the fund would be put towards malaria treatment and prevention across 13 states in Nigeria over the course of 5 years. The plan is to equip 3,536 primary healthcare centres in these state to provide free or subsidised anti-malaria healthcare to 60 million people.
The minister says the plan is expected to prevent 78,000 deaths and avert 14.5 million cases of malaria related illnesses.
